◦ What language areas do you think you particularly want work on to be a well qualified English teacher?
◦ Stundents these days tend to really care their English teacher's pronunciation. They seem to believe that English teachers should pronounce just like a native speakers of English. What do you think about this belief? How would you react to this attitude (belief)?
I chose second question.
I really cared my English teacher's pronunciation, too. If pronouncing like a native, the teacher seems to have more English ability and be a competent teacher. It's true. But English teacher in Korea is Korean and can't have perfect pronunciation like a native unless studying abroad at an early age. (In linguistics, they say generally that if you start to learn any language after adolescence, after maybe 12 or 13 years of age, then you’ll never be able to pronounce it exactly like a native speaker. )
As teacher Giving a lecture in English, It's enough to be recognize as a English teacher having sufficient qualifications. Most of all, I think pronunciation is just a factor of teaching English.
If Only concerning about pronunciation, native speakers are must taken on as a teacher. Because teachers are teaching non-native English speaking students English, native speakers' teaching skills are probably limited.
Of course, teachers must try to improve their pronunciation to be like a native. Though not having perfectly nature pronunciation, appearing confident at class is very important. Teachers teaching students with passion, students are must satisfied a class and take part in a class with enthusiasm.
